What is the Safer Drivers Course?
The Awesome SDC® Armidale Safer Drivers Course is a Transport for NSW-approved course designed specifically for young learner drivers.
Learning to drive is about much more than simply learning how to operate a car. The Safer Drivers Course helps learner drivers understand the risks they may face on the road and develop practical strategies to make safer decisions.
You'll learn about hazard awareness, speed management, safe following distances, gap selection, distractions, passenger influence and other factors that can increase your risk of a crash.
The course is designed to help you become a safer, more confident driver before you start driving independently on your Ps.
The Safer Drivers Course consists of two modules and takes 5 hours in total:
- Module 1 - 3-hour interactive workshop: A group-based session with a qualified facilitator involving discussions, activities and interactive learning.
- Module 2 - 2-hour practical coaching session: An in-car session with a professional driving instructor and another learner, where you put the safe-driving strategies from Module 1 into practice.
When you successfully complete the Safer Drivers Course, you receive 20 bonus hours of logbook credit.
Why is the Safer Drivers Course important for learner drivers?

Who can attend the Armidale Safer Drivers Course?
To attend the NSW Safer Drivers Course, you must:
- Hold a current NSW learner licence
- Be under 25 years of age
- Have completed at least 50 hours of actual on-road driving
- Have completed some night driving as part of those hours
- The 50 hours cannot include bonus hours received through the 3-for-1 professional driving lesson scheme.

Can I do the course for free?
Some eligible learner drivers may be able to complete the Safer Drivers Course free of charge through the NSW Government's concession program.
Free places may be available to eligible disadvantaged young learner drivers, including those who hold a current Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card or who are currently or were formerly in out-of-home care, subject to the program's eligibility requirements.

The course is delivered by an experienced local facilitator, with the practical Module 2 session completed with a professional driving instructor.
Our current Armidale courses are scheduled on weekends and during school holiday periods, making it easier to fit the course around school, work and other commitments.
